Revell re-released the Monogram F-105D in 2000 in the UK for a bargain £10. I eventually got round to building it in the Spring 2004. The basic kit is quite detailed, but I decided to add an Eduard photo-etch set and rescribe the raised panel lines. The detail set is quite comprehensive and includes new cockpit components, intake splitter plates, jet exhaust, antennae and other assorted bits-and-bobs. The kit nose is, to my eyes, too pointed — the real aircraft has a curved nose whereas that in the kit is straight, but I didn't modify it. I replaced the nose pitot with brass tube and wire, and sanded of the reinforcing plates which were features of later D-models. The model was painted with Humbrol enamels, and I think I grabbed the wrong tin for the undersides — it's not quite the right shade. I used the kit decals, and they were not great being a bit out-of-register and resistant to decal solvents. The main problem with this model is the undercarriage. I tried to get the Aeroclub metal replacement, but could not find a set. To make matters worse, the axle on one leg snapped off. I've replaced it with wire, but to no avail: both main wheels cant inwards at a nasty angle.
