Royal Air Force, 5 Squadron, UK 1984
Following the Lightning F.1, which was the earliest version of the Lightning, I built the Airfix kit of the latest version: the F6. As with the F1, this kit is beautiful and went together very easily. I added the Airwaves photo-etch detail set, which to be honest was useless and fitted very poorly. The only worthwhile components it provided were the missile fins and the small triangular aerials. An Airwaves resin seat was used, which is very nice. Kit decals were used; they're okay, but silvered a bit as I hadn't yet managed to get any Microsol. The decals on the port side have faded quite badly in the showcase. Paint is good old Humbrol with Alclad II on the nose ring and aluminium exhaust ring. The nose pitot was replaced with brass tube and wire, and the plane armed with Red Top missiles. This model was built in the Summer of 2001.
